Description

HAINTON SIXHILLS LANE TF 18 SE (west side) 2/22 Chapel of St. Francis de Sales G.V. II Roman Catholic chapel. 1836 by E. J. Willson. Stock brick with limestone ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with stone coped gables with kneelers, tall finials and pinnacles. Chapel orientated north to south instead of west to east. North lobby, nave and chancel in one, south-east vestry. Plinth and moulded string course run round entire chapel. North front with 2 small rectangular windows with inner, pointed, cusped heads. Pointed window above with 3 cupsed ogee headed lights, vertical tracery and hood mould. Flanking 2 stage buttresses rise into narrow chimneys, of square plan and battlemented tops, and with flanking pinnacles. East side with 2 stage buttress to right with doorway to left with four centred head, chamfered surround, rectangular hood mould and plank door. Pilaster to left. 2 pointed windows beyond each with cusped, ogee headed lights and vertical tracery. Moulded eaves and parapet above. Vestry projects to east with square porch with squat square turret above with ashlar dressed quatrefoil. Doorway with four centred head, chamfered surround and plank door in north wall of eastern recess. South front with low vestry to east with rectangular window with 3 pointed lights, moulded eaves and parapet above. South front proper with broad, blank central bay with single flanking recessed bays, each with tall lancets and ogee, cusped inner heads and tracery. 2 stage buttresses with curved set-offs rise up to moulded eaves and parapet and into narrow pinnacled pilastered. Central gable with cross motif inscribed. West front with 3 pointed windows to right, each with 3 cusped, ogee headed lights and vertical tracery. Doorway to left with four centred head, chamfered surround, rectangular hood mould and plank door. Rectangular window above with 2 cusped, ogee headed lights and hood mould. Moulded eaves and parapet above. Chapel interior with north lobby with staircase leading to large north gallery. Central section of gallery projects with coving. Doorway with flat head and cloth covered door below. Tall gold and white reredos with flanking polygonal columns, decorated panelling and central crucifixion. Plain south-east vestry doorway with statue above. Eaves with gold lettered inscription including bequest for prayers for George Heneage, founder of the chapel. Panelled ceiling with St. Andrew's cross motif, in red, white and blue. C19 pews with finialled bench ends. Listing NGR: TF1808384334
