Description
BURGH ON BAIN GIRSBY TF 28 NW 6/18 Gates, piers and flanking balu- strades and walls to Girsby Manor II Gates, gate piers and flanking balustrades and walls. c.1840, reconstructed 1905. Brick, ashlar, concrete and wrought iron. Pair of wrought iron gates with decorative upper and lower rails and vertical panels, containing curlicues, surmounted by scrolled top and centre piece, flanked by square ashlar cordonned pillars with moulded bases and capitals, having egg and dart frieze, segmental pediments surmounted by moulded concrete foxes. In the front pediments are scrolled cartouches, that on the left contains initials "V.U.St.J" and on the right the date "1905". To either side are straight ashlar balustrades, surmounted by curling wrought iron side brackets, the balustrades terminating in square piers with ball finials. Beyond are curving sections of balustrade terminating in similar piers. Beyond again to the road side are stone coped low brick walls, 9 bays to the left and 3 bays to the right, divided by square brick piers again with stone ball finials. Girsby Manor, now demolished, belonged to the Fox family, hence the rebus gate piers which were erected by John St. Vigor Fox. Listing NGR: TF2154086931
