Description

NORTH ELKINGTON TF 29 SE 3/35 Church of St. Helen 9.3.67 II Parish church, now closed. 1851-2 by S. S. Teulon in Early English style. Squared limestone rubble, stone coped slate roofs. Nave with western bellcote, chancel, vestry, south porch. Nave and chancel are undifferentiated externally. At the west end are 2 tall lancets with above a vesica. The gabled single belfry has a scalloped arch and narrow angle shafts and is surmounted by a cross fleury. On the north side of the nave are 2 lancets and a vestry with small paired lancets to the east wall. The chancel east wall has 3 stepped lancets under a continuous hood mould. In the chancel south wall are 2 small lancets. The nave south wall has 2 lancets, one to each side of the porch and a paired lancet with trefoil over. The gabled south porch has a deeply moulded outer arch with angle shafts and hood mould having floriate label stops. The inner doorway has a continuously chamfered pointed reveal and the door has decorative ironwork. Built into both side walls of the porch are C13 coffin lid fragments, that on the west side being a particularly ornate cross fleury. Interior. Retains all C19 stained glass. Nave and chancel are structurally undivided but there is a low cancellum screen with central steps to higher sanctuary. The roofs are arch braced supported by carved corbels, those to the sanctuary having tail terminals. The rear arches of the eastern windows have collared shafts, annular capitals and moulded heads with dog toothing. In the north wall is a pulpit modelled on C13 original at Tupholme Abbey. A trefoil headed moulded arched door leads to the vestry, and a turning to the left leads to the canted pulpit in the thickness of the wall, which also has a moulded trefoil arch over. The 2 openings are divided by a wall shaft with annular capital and base with tail terminal. All fittings are C19 apart from the C14 font, plain octagonal bowl and moulded base with C19 moulded shaft. Listing NGR: TF2858890424
