Description

TF 23 NE WIGTOFT MAIN ROAD (north side) 8/97 Church of St.Peter and St. Paul 26.1.67 I Parish church. C12, C13, late C13, C14, C15, restoration 1891. Ashlar, squared coursed limestone rubble, lead roofs. Western tower, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch, chancel. 3 stage tower with plinth, chamfered string course, battlemented parapet, stepped buttresses and octagonal south western stair turret. Recessed spire with lucarnes. C15 2 light panelled traceried belfry openings to each side. Round headed C12 west door possibly reset, with above C12 window with collared nook shafts, foliate capitals and chevron moulded rounded head. C14 north aisle with 2 light west window and 3 three light side windows, all with reticulated tracery. Blocked C14 continuously moulded and pointed door. 8 three light C15 clerestory cusped windows with chamfered surround, embattled parapet. In the C19 ashlar organ chamber a reset 2 light matching window. Cl9 4 light east window to chancel with panel tracery. Fleuron frieze to string course, stepped and gabled buttresses. Moulded C14 priest's door with label stops, chamfered hood. Position indicates chancel shortened. Also a tall C15 3 light window, panel traceried with concave moulded surround. South aisle has C14 3 light east and west windows and 3 similar to the south, all with cusped reticulated tracery. Clerestory matches that to the north. Gabled Cl9 south porch with reset C13 outer arch, shafted reveals, stiff leaf frieze and moulded head. C13 inner doorway, double chamfered with moulded hood. Interior. 4 bay late C13 nave arcades with quatrefoil filleted shafts, annular capitals, moulded heads. C13 tower arch, chamfered with a step, octagonal reveals and capitals, it cuts blocked C12 single arches to either side. Above can be seen the earlier nave roof line. Nave roof is C15, with moulded principals. In the south aisle a C14 trefoil headed piscina and a plain aumbry. The easternmost window has a C14 brattished sill and a row of human heads above a tomb recess. C14 chancel arch with wave moulded reveals, annular capitals and moulded head. Arch to rood loft, behind chancel arch. C19 arch in chancel to organ chamber. C19 roof on outsize corbels. Fittings. Cl7 plain baluster altar rails. C17 octagonal pulpit with chip carved panels and dentillated frieze. Some elements remains of much restored C15 chancel screen, 5 panel traceried bays with cusped ogee arches. C19 octagonal ashlar font. Listing NGR: TF2628236228
