Description

CANWICK HALL DRIVE SK 9870-9970 (south side) 9/14 Church of All Saints 23.8.67 GV I Parish church. C12, C14, early C18 restored C19. West tower, nave, north aisle, chancel and vestry. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs with coped gables, that to east with kneelers. Quoins and chamfered plinth. Early C18 west tower, square with rounded and chamfered plinths, west face has small round headed window with smaller window above plus some medieval architectural fragments buried in the walling. Each face has a single pointed arched bell opening with plain ashlar surrounds, above C19 moulded ashlar battlements with 4 corner pinnacles. North aisle has central pointed arched doorway with double doors, flanked by single pointed arched windows with Y tracery. C19 vestry has moulded ashlar battlements, east front has single 2 light flat headed window with tracery. Chancel north wall has small priests door, east wall has a 3 light pointed arched window with reticulated tracery and hood mould, flanked by single Gothic arched wall tablets, that to right to Edward Clarke 1853. South wall has a pointed arched window with Y tracery. Nave south wall has 2, 3 light pointed arched windows with reticulated tracery and hood moulds. INTERIOR: north arcade has 2 plain round arches with a circular pier and reponds with scalloped capitals and square bases. To the west a later pointed and double chamfered arch, which dies into the imposts. Chancel arch, round with 3 orders of colon- nettes and the outer arch with zig-zag mould. Chancel has priests doorway with chamfered lintel and jambs, and a double chamfered and pointed chapel arch. Stone front with octagonal bowl supported on 4 corner columns, and with moulded octagonal stem. Plaster ceilings, that to nave supported on wooden beams and stone corbels. C19 wooden organ loft to west. C18 wooden panel pulpit, and C18 turned baluster alter rail. C19 wooden pews with some C18 dado panelling. 5 hatchments and a plaster royal coat of arms over the chancel arch. 2 canvas commandments boards. Various marble wall tablets, mostly to the Sibthorpe family. Listing NGR: SK9874569700
