Description
CANWICK HALL DRIVE SK 9870-9970 (south side) 9/13 Canwick House GV II Former rectory, now retirement home. 1889 designed by William Watkins in the Queen Anne Revival style. Red brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings. Plain tile hipped roofs with decorative ridge tiles and finials. 5 moulded brick stacks. 2 storey plus attics. South, garden front, 7 irregular bays, slightly projecting centre has 3 sashes with cut brick scroll jambs and ornate open pedimented hoods, to the left a canted brick bay window with curving coped parapet and 3 sashes with moulded stone surrounds and ornate open pediments, beyond a glazed doorway with 4 stone steps. To the left a projecting square bay window with 2 sashes and above 2 sashes with decorative terracotta panels between and plain pilasters, topped by a hipped roof. To the left 2 sashes with moulded ashlar surrounds, the left window has linking surround to upper sash, with decorative terracotta panel between and topped by an open pediment. This section topped by a large and a small Dutch gable. Beyond a sash with moulded ashlar surround and ornate pediment. All these windows have divided upper, and segment headed lower sashes. Beyond to the left 2 glazing bar sashes, with another similar sash above, topped by a Dutch gable. Attached to the south-east a conservatory with original glazing and C20 roof. Each end has a tall external stack which rises through an upper dormer window with casements and decorative plaster side panels. North-east corner has 2 storey bay with 3 stone cross casements to each floor and decorative terracotta panels between. North, entrance front has off- centre doorway with 3 stone steps and a 4-centred arched doorway with part glazed door and divided overlight topped by a pediment. To the right a plain sash with semicircular overlight with keystone, above 2 plain sashes with cut brick surrounds and ornate hoods, to the right a small circular window. Above a plain sash in cut brick surround with keystone and open pediment topped by a Dutch gable. To the right a 2 light corner dormer. To the left a large round headed stair window also topped by a Dutch gable. Beyond to the right a door and 2 windows, with above a single glazing bar sash to each floor with linking cut brick surround and decorative terracotta panel between, and above a pedimented Dutch gable.
