Description

TF 03 NE THREEKINGHAM SPANBY 7/111 Former Parish Church of St. Nicholas II Former parish church, now shed. C14 and 1882. Red brick in English bond, some limestone ashlar dressings, plain tiled roof with raised stone coped gables. Narthex, nave with bellcote and apsidal chancel. At the west end is a gabled narthex across the axis of the church. It has 3 small lancets to the west with roll moulded surrounds. To the west gable of the nave is a large circular window with cinquelobed tracery. To the gable is the base only of a timber bellcote supported on curved ashlar corbels. On the north side, the narthex has a 3 light mullioned and transomed window with plain ashlar lintel and brick relieving arch. The north wall of the nave has a moulded plinth, cill band and dentillated eaves course. There are 3 lancet windows with roll moulded surrounds. The apse has a double plinth and cill band, and there are 7 trefoil headed lancets. On the south side of the apse is a narrow projecting rectangular bay containing 2 pierced quatrefoils in an ashlar block. The south side of the nave matches the north, but with the addition of 2 pilaster buttresses with tumbling and pointed ashlar tops. The south door is pointed with a moulded head and triangular hood having an ammonite stop and floriate finial. Inside is a door to the vestry which is reset C14 work from the earlier church at Spanby. It has a double roll moulded and pointed surround and above is set a small human head. The nave doorway is pointed and roll moulded. Interior: The broad pointed chancel arch has moulded imposts and 2 rolled orders to the stepped head. The ovolo moulded hood has ammonite stops. The apse has a dentillated cornice and the sanctuary floor has fine Minton tiles. All fittings have been removed. Listing NGR: TF0955438177
