Description

CROWLAND ABBEY WALK TF 2410-2510 (east side) 18/2 Gravestones, table tombs, coffins and monument to west of church G.V. II 99 gravestones, 2 table tombs, an obelisk, 3 medieval coffins and fragmentary coffin. C14, C17, C18 and early C19. Limestone ashlar. Table tomb directly to west of west doorway with squat, bulbous balusters, foliate bands and barely legible inscription including: 'John H.... 1779'. 2 medieval coffins to the south, with fragmentary lids; single medieval coffin and fragmentary coffin to the north. Gravestones include one to the left of the table tomb of 1797 with urn, cherub heads and festoons. Gravestone to Thomas Carrington, died 1680; another to Henry Roberts, died 1771, with winged cherub heads, festoons and ribbons. Gravestone to Thomas Whitsed, died 1788 and a late C17 gravestone to Jonathon Barker. Early C19 gravestone to John Tooley with urn and draperies; another to John Tooley, died 1829 with winged cherub head, open book and flowers. Another 6 early C19 gravestones to the right including one with oval topped by thistle head, angels, foliate bands and palms. Another to the right with winged cherub and festoons; with one beyond with open segmental pediment, pilasters and winged cherub. Gravestone further right of 1727 with sgemental pediment, cherub head and festoons. 2 mid C18 gravestones to the right with winged cherub head and festoons. To the west is a gravestone with a scrolled open pediment with cherub head. To the left, a scrolled cartouche with segmental pediment and winged cherub. 2 gravestones beyond both with winged cherub heads. 3 illegible small C17 gravestones to the west with 2 gravestones to the left, inscribed respectively: 'Daniel Elam, died 1630', and 'John Elam, died 1686'. 2 gravestones to the left, one dated 1754 and both with cartouche and scrolled acanthus keystone. Early C18 gravestone to the west, to the left, with 2 figures, one standing on an hourglass, the other on a column, and with winged cherub head. 2 gravestones to the right, one with a cartouche and both with winged cherub heads. Far to the right is a gravestone to John Briggins, died 1618. To the west to the far south is a gravestone with a pair of winged cherub heads and cartouche. Segmental headed gravestone to the west with 2 draped shields and cherub. Obelisk to west to Thomas Boore, died 1842. Late C18 table tomb to the left with paired, squat bulbous balusters. 4 gravestones to south west, one to Robert Apthorp, died 1815, flanked by single late C18 gravestones. 2 of the 3 gravestones to the left are early C18, with draperies. Gravestone to north- west to Bilderson, died 1808, with open book, urn and angels. Gravestone to south-west with ornate eared architrave, segmental head, foliage, angels and festoons. Gravestone to the right with 2 angels and crown. Gravestone further right to William Cowling, died 1765, with traceried pilasters, angel and foliage. Smaller early C18 gravestone to right with winged cherub. 2 gravestones to the west, one with a cherub, one with festoons and both late C18. Listing NGR: TF2411610311
