Full Description
A Baptist chapel on Wharf Road, Grantham. The building is of red brick with stone dressings, and a decorative stone façade to the southern gable. It is unclear exactly when the building was constructed, though it has a Victorian appearance. The building is first depicted on the 1887 Ordnance Survey Town Map of Grantham, where it is listed as a Particular Baptist Chapel, with seats for 500. The chapel continues in use, though appears to have several alterations, particularly to its northern gable. {1}{2}
White's Directory of 1856 notes that the Baptists in Grantham have a meeting room in the Exchange Hall, which would indicate that the Chapel did not exist at that time. By the next edition of the Directory in 1872 White states that the Baptists have a neat chapel on Wharf Road, and it is this chapel that is visible on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map and also on the 1905 map. {3}{4}{5}
The Minute Books of the Grantham Wharf Road Baptist Chapel survive in the Lincolnshire Archives. These run from the year 1868 and so this is likely to be the date the first chapel opened. {6}
There is a Baptist Chapel on this site on the 1931 Ordnance Survey map (the map was surveyed in 1929) but the footprint of the building is much smaller than the earlier building and stands to the rear of the plot. It would appear that the earlier chapel had been demolished, at least in part, at this date. By 1965 the Ordnance Survey is showing the current chapel on the site. The date of 1930 visible on the decorative stone façade of the south front of the building would, therefore, date the current (2017) building. {7}{1}
