Full Description

48710 Hasthorpe is a small place in Willoughby with Sloothby parish. It is mentioned in Domesday book where it is subordinate to Willoughby and has a minimum population of nine. {1} It is named Haroldestorp in Domesday which is a combination of the Old Danish personal name 'Harald' and 'Thorpe' meaning secondary settlement, presumably of Willoughby. The settlement is intermittently found in medieval documentation from the mid 13th century to early 14th century. {2} Hasthorpe was normally combined with Willoughby and so not separately noted in medieval documentation. For example, it does not appear in the 1334 lay subsidy returns for the wapentake. {3} In 1563 it is recorded in the diocesan census returns as having 4 households. {4} The hamlet is marked on the 1 inch to the mile OS map of 1824 and in White's Directory of 1856 there are only two persons listed at Hanthorpe. {5}{6} By the late 19th century there is just Hasthorpe House and a farm here on the County Series OS maps of 1888 and 1905. {7}{8}
