Full Description
A stone-lined well was noted during grass cutting at Scampton Airfield. The well showed signs of relatively modern brick repairs, and may be associated with the Second World War use of the site. Its exact origin is uncertain, however, and an earlier date of construction could equally be possible. The well was to be filled in using gravel and topped off with soil, in order to prevent accidents at the airfield. {1}
A small complex of probable post-medieval farm buildings and a well are depicted in this location on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The buildings and well are of likely 19th century origin, with the site probably being cleared as part of the Second World War re-opening and expansion of the surrounding RAF Scampton. {2}
