Full Description

The building features in a set of photographs produced in June 1999. These show a two storey construction in mixed limestone rubble and dressed blocks, with a slate roof which is half-hipped at the southern end. A recent demolition at the northern end of the building (presumably of an adjoining structure) has left a brick-built gable, whitewashed at ground floor level and plastered above, with a timber framed door at first floor level. The east side of the building has eight squared window openings, each with stone surrounds, which, at ground floor level, have been infilled with limestone rubble, alternating to brick infill at first floor level. Similar infilled openings are also present in a stone wall extending north from the north-east corner of the building, while in the east wall of the building, located in the central section of the wall at ground floor level, are two circular openings with brick surrounds, and further to the south, an arched opening with brick surround. The west side of the building has a number of windows, all with stone surrounds, and a large door with a timber lintel at the northern end. A stone wall extending westward from the south-west corner of the building incorporates a gated opening with decorative stonework above, including an iron sundial. Internally, the building is divided by a brick wall, pierced at ground level by a large door on the western side; a lightly constructed timber partition is present in the northern part of the building. The internal wall continues at first floor level, where it is pierced by another door on the western side of the building. The roof is carried by sawn timbers. The building would appear to be Victorian or earlier in date, but is not clearly identifiable on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map, where it seems to form part of a large complex of adjoining buildings. {1}{2}
