Full Description

Wooden and slate railway goods shed. {1} The foot print of the surviving building is the same as the building recorded on the 1905 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. {2} This is a rare survival of a timber goods shed on a branch line. It was probably built around 1925 perhaps on the foundations of an earlier goods shed. By no means all Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway stations were provided with goods sheds, the proportion being greater on the western section. Here it seems that most of the original goods sheds were built in panelled brick with pitch slate roofs and one through siding, but there were of course detail differences. The Peterborough, Wisbech and Sutton Bridge Railway featured sheds with arched panelling, but the Great Northern Railway-controlled Norwich and Spalding Railway had flat topped panelling. The exceptions were the Spalding and Bourne stations where large timber sheds were provided. Twenty, North Drove and Bourne sheds were demolished in 1925, and North Drove was replaced with a small timber structure on a concrete block base. {3} The former goods shed was the subject of a programme of historic building recording in October 2013, prior to its proposed renovation and change of use. The building is of a single phase of construction, built sometime between 1888 and 1904, to replace a smaller goods shed on the site. The building has a large goods storage area with large sliding doors, and a smaller attached office and ancillary store room. It is possible that the structure was dismantled and re-built around 1913-16, when the building was placed on a plinth of concrete blocks. The railway was closed to goods traffic in 1964, and the building subsequently became part of a car sales and breaking yard, until it fell out of use in 1999. {4}{5}
