Full Description

The tower mill at Saxilby Moor was built in 1823, possibly as a replacement for an earlier post-mill located to the east of Saxilby (see MLI116084). It is a four-storey tapering tower, built of red brick with a dogtooth eaves course, and features central planked entrance doors with three timber windows above this, one to each floor. All of the openings have segmental heads. The mill stopped working by wind in 1920, when a steam engine was installed. Historic photographs of the mill show a very tall chimney adjacent to the mill, where smoke and potentially dangerous embers from the fuel burnt to power the steam engine were taken away. The mill originally had four patent sails, though these were removed in 1927, with the mill continuing to operate by engine for some years after this. The cap had been removed by 1931, although a felted roof was installed in its place at some point in the 20th century. The interior retains the original wooden floors together with most of the gear and machinery, including the upright shaft with its square wooden upper section and iron lower section with an iron wallower and great spur wheel. The friction-driven sack-hoist remains, as do two pairs of grey stones and one pair of French stones. The quants, stone nuts and tentering gear have all been removed. The formerly attached steam engine and chimney have also been removed at some point. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The mill is well preserved, with much of the machinery, orignal floors and staircases still surviving. The replacement roof can rotate on the original curb, allowing an external cradle to be suspended for maintenance work to be undertaken on the fabric of the tower. {7}{8}
