Full Description

PRN 38654 [Note - in this case, where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of the undercroft, the Stamford Survey Group report (which is the most detailed) has been taken as the most reliable.] This large early 20th century shop was built in 1904. Beneath it is a vaulted medieval crypt of 13th century date [this date is probably too early - see below] with quadripartite rib-vault. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The undercroft lies beneath the front of the shop, to the east side of the entrance and parallel to the street. It has a basic area of 20 feet by 17 feet 4 inches, with an eastern extension and a further small room off that. The quadripartite vault is ribbed and three of the ribs run down to the floor without shafts or capitals. There is a doorway, now blocked, in the south west corner which is reached by a series of steps. There is a second original entrance in the north wall which now leads to the modern access to the shop. The original entrance to the house above was probably over the small chamber to the east. There are no other openings, suggesting that the undercroft was completely below ground level. A 13th century date has been suggested, however this seems too early and it probably dates from the late 14th or 15th century, certainly after 1350. Nothing of the early building above survives at ground floor level or above. The undercroft appears to have remained in use as part of the shop above until at least the 1960s. {2}{3}
