Full Description
PRN 38651
This low two storey cottage is built of coursed rubble and has medieval features including a 15th century buttress and half of a stone arch built into the wall. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
This house incorporates three walls of a building of probable 13th century date. At the north-east corner is a large medieval buttress and in the east wall there is a blocked arch, around half of which is visible. The blocked arch may belong to a former undercroft. The street front was refaced in the early 19th century. A 13th century window revealed during this work was moved to the vestry of St Mary's church. {2}
There are no medieval features visible inside the building. In a first floor room there are two massive ceiling beams which may represent a ceiling inserted into an open hall. This building is the surviving section of a larger building described in the 18th century. The medieval building appears to have lain several feet below the present street level. {3}
