Full Description
PRN 38614
The Public Library is a single storey ashlar stone building with a very wide wooden eaves cornice, a moulded pediment surmounting the whole frontage and a portico with four Tuscan columns. It is on the site of the Shambles and market. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
This building was formerly the portico to the market and shambles which stood behind it. This market replaced one which had been held in the High Street opposite St Michael's church. Work started on the new building on the present site, which had formerly been the site of the White Lion Inn, in 1804. The building was complete by 1808. By 1868, it had become dilapidated and part of the shambles was demolished. It was converted into a public library in 1906. The portico was originally open and included space for a watch house (police station), a Beadle's house and provision for a fire engine as well as the fish market and butter market. {2}
This building was designed by William Legg, who was influenced by Inigo Jones. {3}
There are some fragments of a medieval arcade incorporated into the outbuildings to the library. They were revealed during recent alterations but are now hidden and no details are known about them. {4}
