Full Description

PRN 38610 This house is of medieval origin, but with a somewhat over-restored front dating to 1849. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house, which is known as Gothic House, is mostly of two storeys and comprises a long range running back from the street. It incorporates the rear wing of a large timber framed, jettied house of probable 16th century date. At the rear is another block of similar date. This structure was originally detached but was joined to the main house in the later 16th century. The street front of the main range was replaced by the current Gothic styled front in 1849, which was described by a contempory news report as a 'fine specimen of the revived Tudor style'. A former passageway to the west of the house has been incorporated into the later shop, preserving part of the jettied outside wall of the original building. Original beams can be seen in various places and the original roof structure also survives with some later alterations including the removal of a chimney in 1788. In the later 18th century the house belonged to Thomas Rayment, a clockmaker, whose name is painted on a roof collar along with the date 1788. {2}
