Full Description

PRN 38369 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This house was built around 1600 and had a main range and cross wing. It was originally timber framed but early in the 17th century the east elevation was cased in stone and the jettied north end was underbuilt with reused masonry although the overhang was kept. There is a two storey bay window at the south end of the east elevation. The present roof is a 17th or early 18th century replacement of the original although a short section of the earlier roof survives on the west. {1} This two storey rendered and painted house dates to the mid 17th century and later [this is slightly incorrect - see above]. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The ground floor facing St Peter's Street contains a stone mullioned window made up of fragments of re-used 14th century stonework including part of a decorated cornice. The roof includes a small fragment of a lower roof which may possibly represent the remains of a cross wing and hall passage relating to a hall which has since been sold and rebuilt. There are also signs of a blocked doorway adjacent to the neighbouring property. {4}
