Full Description

62 St Leonard's Street is a house of probable 17th century origin, comprising two storeys in coursed rubble with a slate roof. The windows to each storey have moulded stone bands and mullions. The door is squeezed in beside the ground floor bay window. The building has a datestone on the front of 1662. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The main part of the building dates to 1662, although parts of an earlier medieval building are thought to have been incorporated into the structure. These parts are comprised of the rear stone wall along with one or possibly two supporting stone butresses. The butresses have mutilated, weathered tops, and both the wall and butresses appear to have originally been higher. It was thought, during a site visit conducted in October 2004, that the rear wall may have originally extended across the plots currently occupied by numbers 61, 62, 63 and the building at the corner with St George's Street. It was further thought that the medieval building could have been a central hall, flanked by crosswings in a common 15th and 16th century medieval form. There was also evidence to suggest that the wall may have been re-used in a later timber building, which may have fallen into disrepair in the mid 17th century, prior to the creation of the currrent four plots. {2}{3}{4}
