Full Description

PRN 38165 This watermill beside the River Welland has existed since at least the 14th century. The main fabric of the current building is mid to late 16th century. Details from this period include a doorway (which may be reset), windows and a fireplace [although these are considered to be early 17th century by the RCHM - see below]. There is a full documentary record of this mill. {1} This former corn mill was converted into a house around 1990. It has an inscribed date of 1641 [although it is probably earlier - see above] as well as two datestones from the 18th century, reading 1751 and 1771. The garden front has 20th century glazing including glass doors and there is a 20th century extension. The interior has large chamfered beams,17th century timber floors and some 17th century timber roof structure. It also contains fragments of timber supports for milling machinery which has been removed. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} This mill stands across the mill stream. It is built of large squared masonry and is two storeys high. The south end of the building was probably the miller's house. It dates from the first half of the 17th century [it is possibly earlier than this - see above] and has a deeply incised inscription in the south gable reading 'IRELAND 164..'. There are also several stones inscribed with names and 18th century dates. {3}
