Full Description

PRN 37890 This two storey building consists of no. 19 and the adjacent public house, The Vaults, which has a half-timbered upper storey. It is probably of 16th century origin, although the fenestration of no. 19 is 18th century. There is a large carriage entrance with a moulded beam with a 16th century boss. It has an old slate roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The Vaults was formerly the Eagle and Child Inn. It includes buildings from the late middle ages through to the 19th century arranged around three (formerly four) sides of a courtyard. The front range is mostly medieval although the part to the west of the carriage arch has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The two rear ranges are probably 17th century. The east part of the front range is timber framed and jettied, with stone underbuilding. The interior includes various early features. {2} This building appears to have originally been a hall and cross-wing building, probably of 16th century date. {4}
