Full Description

PRN 37671 [Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This house originated as a stone house with an open hall built in the 14th or early 15th century. The original house was parallel to the street with the hall at the west end. In the early 16th century the east section was rebuilt as a two storied, timber framed, jettied range and a central timber framed, jettied porch was also added to the hall entrance. An illustration by Stukeley from 1735 shows this building and he described the hall as having a large window of painted glass and a gilded ceiling. Only some roof trusses from this building and the position of the entrance now survive. The hall was altered in the early 18th century by Boniface Bywater, a whitesmith, to make a shop. In 1748 most of the house was demolished and the front rebuilt by Alderman Williamson. There is a rear wing which is probably of 17th century date and built in two stages. {1} This building dates to the mid 18th century [this is probably incorrect - see above]. It is two storeys in height and built of stone with an old slate roof. It has a 19th century shop front.
