Full Description

PRN 37649 [This record contains information from PRN 30721, now deleted.] This two storey stone house is under the same roof as no. 7 (PRN 38365). It is probably 15th century [this may be incorrect - see below]. No. 8 has a two storey rectangular bay window. There are three heraldic shields above the door of no. 9. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house has a front range of probable 17th century date [this may be incorrect - see below] and an extension to the rear which is 18th century. Beyond this is a further rear wing of 19th century date. The front range has been gutted but retains some original beams. The roof has clasped purlins. {2} These houses are said to be mainly 15th century but much altered, built of stone and timber framing. However, a brief examination of no. 8 revealed nothing to support this claim apart from a double jetty in the gable end. The outline of the building, especially the windows, together with the fact that it is below the present street level suggest an earlier building and the roof line suggests a possible hall and cross wing. However, further examination is necessary to confirm this. {4} During building works to lower the floor in the shop at no. 8 by 18 inches in 1974 a small assemblage of Stamford ware pottery and some bone were seen. No earlier building remains were encountered and natural deposits were not reached. It was also noted that the interior floor levels appeared to be original and were well below street level. {5}
