Full Description

Former silk throwsting house, dating from the early 19th century. Alterations, including the extensive remodelling of the second storey, were made in the late 19th century, when the building is thought to have been converted to a maltings. A malting kiln with perforated tile floor and conical plaster ceiling was added to the south end at this time. The building is a long, rectangular range of two storeys on a semi-basement, and is constructed of red brick, with stone dressings to the openings, and a hipped roof of slate. The windows and doorways in the semi-basement have stone jambs and segmental heads with keystones. Each floor above has four tall five-or six-light fixed or casement windows in the east wall. At the northern end is a wagon door top the ground floor, and a loading door above with stone jambs. The western wall is blank. Internally, the floors are of plaster over wooden joists, with the cross beams of the upper floor being supported on circular cast iron columns. The building is of special historic interest as evidence of the silk throwsting industry in Stamford. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} The building had been demolished at some point prior to late 2008, and was subsequently de-listed. {3}
