PRN 37211
These three shops form a single stone building of late 18th or early 19th century date. They are three storeys in height and have a slate roof and 19th century shop fronts. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
This building was constructed as three shops with accommodation above in 1818 by the second Marquess of Exeter, to plans by Legg. It replaced an earlier building on the site. There is a clock in the wall of the corner building, which is signed 'Haynes, Stamford' which refers to Thomas Haynes, a clock-maker and silversmith who had occupied the previous corner shop and continued his business on the same site after the rebuilding. The three shop fronts are original. The interior has original doors and architraves but the staircase is modern. {2}
On the west wall of this building, in the lane between it and the Post Office, is some medieval walling which is probably rebuilt. There is also a 12th century capital built into the wall at a height of about 8 ft from the ground. {3}
