Full Description

Grade I listed section of Roman wall, dating from the 2nd century, thickened and raised in the 4th century and consolidated in the mid 20th century. It is herringbone coursed and random rubble and is approximately eight metres long and three metres high. The wall was part of the Colonia defensive wall which was strengthened in the 4th century. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The remains of the Roman wall on East Bight were the subject of building recording in 1993. The survey concluded that, although the core material of the wall was not greatly damaged, stabilisation works would be needed to stop the continual erosion of material from the wall. {2}{3}
