Full Description

A farmhouse dating from the early 18th century which underwent alteration in the late 19th century. It was constructed of red brick and has a pantile roof with brick coping to the gable ends. The building contains the Bratoft collection of Lincolnshire farm life. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Church Farm forms the principal building of the Church Farm Museum, which was the subject of a Conservation Management Plan, written in 2008. The plan detailed the history of the buildings and the threats to their preservation. Church Farm was originally the centre of a small farmstead, founded in the early 18th century. The farmstead was gradually surrounded by new development during the second half of the 20th century, and much of the original rural character of the site was lost. The remainder of the farmstead was bought by East Lindsey District Council in 1973, when a decision was made to restore the surviving farm buildings and convert the site into a museum of Lincolnshire farm life. This museum opened in 1976, and the site has been used since 1981 to relocate various agricultural buildings from across Lincolnshire, giving the appearance of a far more complex agricultural site than it ever previously had. Church Farm was originally a simple structure, typical of a small farmhouse of this date, and consisted of two storeys and an attic, with two rooms on each floor. It was constructed of local purple brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and although it now has a pantile roof, there is evidence to suggest that it was originally thatched. The building has seen many phases of alterations and extensions, and whilst little of the original internal fabric is present, the building has been preserved in its late 19th century form. {2} Church Farm Museum (Church Farm), Skegness. Partially extant 18th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. {3}
