Full Description

A former rectory, now house, dating from the 14th century which underwent alterations in the 15th, 16th, 18th and 19th centuries. It was partly timber framed which was cased in the 19th century with yellow Kirkby brick, although the building was of red brick in the 15th century. It has slate roofs some with raised brick coped gables. Internally, the building's hall was built in about 1345 by the then rector William Hillary and the timber framed cross wing was added in 1350 to 1463, and cased in brick by John Croxby, rector, in 1463. The later history of the house is well documented, beginning with William Skelton's probate inventory of 1602 as well as a run of terriers after 1606. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The timber-framed house was originally built about 1350 by William Hillary, a rector with Staffordshire connections. It was originally an aisled design with an open service bay at the lower end; the two bay hall had a base cruck truss. The surviving woodwork is of a very high quality. The two storey cross wing, later than the hall and originally timber-framed, is cased in brick and this brickwork is ascribed to John Croxby, rector 1460-92, and was probably built in 1463. The house, occupied by rectors and sometimes curates, remained a large establishment with outbuildings in the early to mid 17th century. It was the property of prosperous gentlemen farmers until 1729. The house ceased to be occupied as a parsonage house in 1956 when it was sold by the diocesan authorities. {2}
