Full Description

Three large pits identified during a watching brief on land off Cross Road, Langtoft Common, Langtoft, undertaken in April and May 2001. Pit one (F.1) was 2.65m in diameter and 1.1m in depth. The upper half of the pit contained baked clay, burn stone and animal bone. The lower fills contained baked clay, pottery and animal bone including an 'awl' crafted from a cattle ulna. Pit two (F.2) was 3.25m in diameter and 1.3m in depth. The upper fill contained pottery, baked clay and animal bone. The lower fills contained baked clay, animal bone, a significant quantity of roundwood (woodworking debris and coppice) and two worked wooden implements which are a dowel-like object and a complete ash palstave haft. The third pit (F.3) had similar dimensions to the other pits but no finds. The pottery was classified as middle Bronze Age in date. Some of the baked clay implements had finished surfaces suggesting they came from artefacts such as loomweights. {1}{2}.
