Full Description

PRN 47194 Former Boys School building, now derelict. It is constructed in polychrome brick with a slate roof and appears on the 1891 map. It is considered to be of townscape interest by the Conservation Area Appraisal. {1} One and a half storey red brick building in English Bond with blue and yellow brick banding, under a pitched gabled slate roof. One large lateral stack and one squat ridge stack. Cross-wing plan with a lower front wing including a gabled porch. Dressed ashlar door and window surrounds. Northeastern gable has a large 3 light arched window with stone mullions. {2} According to White's 1856 Trade Directory, the school was built in 1820 and at the time was attended by 50 boys. By 1872 attendance had increased to 130 boys. To accommodate this increase, an extra classrom had been added in 1860, and another 'large room' built in 1866. It is possible that the front wing of the building correlates to one of these extensions; the other may have been constructed as a separate building or even on a different site. {3}{4}
