Full Description

There is a small chapel on Wellington Street. It is considered to be of townscape interest by the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. {1} The former Pentecostal chapel seems to have been first depicted on the 3rd edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1947. It is not depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1906, suggesting it was built at some point between these two dates. The building is visible on Google Streetview imagery of 2009, but had been demolished by 2013 when the site was visited as part of the survey of nonconformist chapels. The building was single-storey and was built of red brick with a pitched slate roof. {2}{3}{4} Construction of the Pentecostal Chapel began in September 1938, following a stone-laying ceremony attended by local dignitaries and leaders in the Pentecostal faith. The first two foundation stones were laid by Howard Carter, the Chairman of the Assemblies of God at that time. Construction of the chapel had finished by early November, with an official opening service being given on Saturday the 19th of November 1938. Prior to the construction of this new chapel, the congregation had for some time met at the former General Baptist Chapel at Northgate (see MLI86513). {5}{6} [HER note: This is not the same Howard Carter of Egyptology fame].
