Full Description

PRN 70605 A number of Roman finds were discovered on South Common during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These include a pair of tweezers found during railway works (presumably relating to the Lincoln-Grantham line opened in 1867), tombstone fragments found during ground levelling works for a cricket pitch in 1909 and a cremation and pottery sherds found 'in a sandpit' (possibly a golf sand bunker). A further cremation in a rusticated greyware jar was found in 1911 with two or three glass flasks and a bronze mirror fragment. During the levelling of a football pitch, potsherds and glass and iron fragments were found, and a complete small jar was found in 1910. Casual finds of coins and a pair of tweezers have also been reported. These finds imply a general Roman presence in the area although the nature of activity is unclear. The cremations and tombstone suggest burial in the area although the tombstone was thought to have been moved from its original site prior to finding. The exact locations of these finds are not known. {1}
