Full Description
PRN 46987
Model home farmstead built around 1850, connected to Hareby House. The farmstead is set a short distance from the house from which it is not visible, at a road junction. The main block of buildings provides sophisticated accomodation for mixed farming: it is large and imposing, but almost entirely plain. The overall plan adheres to many of the principles set out by the commentators at the time: the barn (here specifically a threshing barn), one of the tallest buildings, is on the north side, protecting the cattle from the cold winds; the remainder of the north range contains chaff houses and cartsheds (facing north) above some of which is the granary. Dividing the area to the south in two equal portions is a two-storey north-south range which appears to have served as a straw and hay barn and fodder preparation area: this was conveniently placed for the distribution of prepared foostuffs to cattle in the flanking yards. The sides of the farmstead contain cake houses, tool stores and loose boxes, while each of the two main yards were was originally divided by an east-west shelter shed. The farmstead was clearly designed to reflect the best practice of its age: the barn was designed for portable steam power, which was quite new in the years around 1850, and part of the cattle accomodation incorporated a sophisticated feeding system which was designed to hold the beasts still while they fed to ensure that each obtained a fair share of the fodder. Another feature of the farmstead is that the loose boxes have timber thresholds, like thoses sometimes found in barns. A detached stable block and exercise yard is located across the road from the main building.{1}
Hareby, Bolingbroke. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with a covered yard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within a Church and/or Manor farm group. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {2}
