Full Description

PRN 36708 An early 18th century shop with seven bays of two storeys with cellars and attics. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.{1} As part of a planning application, a programme of historic building assessment was undertaken at 10 Ironmonger Street. The assessed building was to the rear of the main building. In summary, although associated, and probably contemporary, with a significant and elaborate early 18th century building (no. 10), the assessed structure was not intended to be seen from the highway or publicly accessible. Consequently, it was constructed as a plain and functional building and does not contain any structural or decorative features indicative of either use or original date. Moreover, the building has been much altered in the past so that less than three-quarters of the original structure survives. {2}{3} This building was built in the early 18th century by Henry Butcher, at some time between his purchase of the site in 1706 and his death in 1736. It comprises two houses and appears to have been in use as a shop, often an ironmonger's shop, since it was first built. New shop fronts were installed in the early 19th century, although only the one at no. 9 remains. The interiors have been much altered, although no. 10 retains an early staircase, and an upper room with late 18th century panelling and fireplace. The fittings in no. 9 are mostly late 18th century. {2}{3}{4}
