Full Description

Medieval layers were uncovered at Flaxengate, Lincoln. They contained pottery sherds and an iron nail. They probably represent the rear yards or gardens of properties. {1}{2} During a watching brief at the same site a stone wall of possible medieval date was uncovered. Several undated deposits including pits, dumped deposits and three mortar floors may also be of medieval date. Medieval pottery and roof tile was also recovered from the site, although some of it may be residual. {3}{4} An archaeological watching brief at SK 9765 7148 produced evidence for buildings and occupation dating to the late 10th to late 12th century. Deposits assigned to this period included a range of walls, occupation layers, surfaces and dumped deposits. These accord well with previous discoveries at the site and in close proximity. Of these, a number of stone walls, or their remnants, were identified with stone structures previously identified in 1981 and similar ones at nearby Flaxengate in 1980, 2005 and 2006. The arrangement of these walls suggest a smaller building to the one found at Flaxengate which were broadly of L-shaped arragement, with a north-south 'hall' range located to the rear of a range fronting onto Grantham Street. The demolition of this range of buildings appears to have occurred during the 16th century. Remnants of a crushed chalk and gravel layer in the south-east corner of the site appears to be the remnant of a former road now marked by Grantham Street. {5}{6}
