Full Description

Earthworks of a former medieval field bounday, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} The former boundary was recorded as a linear earthwork during an archaeological topographical survey of this field, conducted in July 2015, during groundworks for the construction of a new lake. The earthwork was aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, and was thought to represent the remains of a medieval former field boundary or headland. The feature shares the same alignment as the remains of medieval ridge and furrow located in the adjacent field to the south-east, and would suggest that this land also formed part of the larger medieval open field system. Much of the field appeared to have been previously levelled, however, and no traces of the typically more ephemeral ridge and furrow was identified. {2}{3}
