Four phases of building development can be recognised. The earliest recognisable phase is of a late 16th/early 17th century 'T' shaped house with the same outline as present. This was of a central hall open to the roof flanked by two storey solar cross-range and linear service ends. The skewed alignment of the solar wing suggests a timber pre-cursor to the hall. This phase is identifiable by a number of windows with chamfered mullions, hood and drip moulds. It is probable that this was the building erected by John Towne and inhabited by his large family. The second phase occurred in the late 17th or early 18th century and involved a total rebuilding of the west and north walls of the west solar range possibly with a degree of rebuilding to part of the east wall of this range. It is probable that a re-building or re-facing of the eastern end of the rear wall also occurred at this date. All the roofs were replaced in this 2nd phase. The third phase consisted of extensive refurbishment when a large number of new windows and doors were inserted, the central hall was divided and a new range with cellar added at right angles to the rear. Much of the interior timberwork belongs to this phase and it seems probable that this phase can be attributed to the Allix family who acquired the property in 1808. The fourth phase consisted of the addition of another rear range parallel to the phase three range and alterations to the north ground floor area of the cross-range. These alterations must have been made by one of the various tenants who inhabited the house after 1861 when Willoughby Hall was built. {3}{4} An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during renovation work at Sudbrook Old Hall, Ancaster. Removal of the floors exposed the remains of former walls allowing a sequence of construction phases to be determined. The watching brief identified additional walls and the sequence of building events previously recorded has been enhanced. A range of artefacts were also retrieved and include medieval and later pottery, glass, metalwork, tile and animal remains. The earliest artefact was an 11th to 13th century pot fragment and additional medieval pottery was also retrieved. It has been suggested that there was a medieval precursor to Sudbrook Hall and ditched ponds to the west of the hall may have once been a moated site (PRN 36606). {5}{6}
