Full Description

PRN 46123 (also look at 41367 possible manor house.) The name of Conisholme was Cunyngesholme in 1155, and is derived from the Old Danish 'kunung' meaning a king and the Old Norse 'holmr' meaning a higher raised ground in the marsh. {1} Conisholme is not listed in either the Domesday survey or the Lindsey survey. {2} In 1334, the Lay subsidy for Conisholme returned a below average amount for the region of £2 0s 8 1/2d. {3} In 1377 the Poll tax had 80 people registered in Conisholme. {4} In 1563 the population was 20 households. {5} The population was 115 in 1801, rising to 171 in 1871 and falling again to 115 in 1901. {6} Earthworks were observed on aerial photographs as part of the national mapping programme. These were interpreted as a moat PRN 46123a (TF 4036 9545); a hollow way PRN 46123b (TF 4037 9528); tofts PRN 46123c & d (TF 4041 9541; TF 4013 9557); and platforms PRN 46132e & f (TF 4043 9538; TF 4040 9527) {7} Earthworks were observed on aerial photographs dated to 1971 & 1999 and on a site visit in 2004, all as part of the Lincolnshire Coastal Grazing Marsh project. {8}
