Full Description

63619 Heckington railway station was built in 1858 and was opened in 1859, and is still open today. The Goods Shed and the Station House are in commercial use. The booking office and the waiting room are now a museum with exhibits relating to the station and the GNR and LNER. Two dates have been suggested for the construction of the signal box (which is a listed building), one being 1858, when the station was originally built, and a date around 1880. The signal box is constructed of red brick with yellow and black dressings and a slate roof. It still has its semaphore signals. The level crossing retains traditional gates. For the former description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4} The station at Heckington was built in 1858-59 along with the station-master’s house, goods shed, and railway hotel. The signal box was built in 1876 for the Great Northern Railway by the engineer Joseph Locke, and has a later Saxby and Farmer lever frame of 1925. It is built in red brick with some black and yellow brick dressings, a slate roof and a single brick wall chimney stack. The signal box at Heckington has survived virtually unaltered, with the exception of the removal of the fireplace in the 1980s, and the recent replacement of the steps. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {5}
