The former preaching house stands on the east side of an alley off the north side of Lord Street. It has brick walls with dentil brick eaves cornices and a gabled roof re-covered in corrugated asbestos. It was erected c.1785 and continued in use until 1804, when it was superseded by a chapel in Beaumont Street or North Street, itself rebuilt in 1968 (see 55132).
When originally constructed the only openings to the ground floor were two symmetrically placed doorways in the south wall, above these was a range of five windows with two or more at the same level in the east and west gabled end walls. It is probable that the pulpit was stood against the north wall and that there were small galleries against the other three sides. Before religious use ceased much rearrangement took place; one of the south doorways was replaced by a window and other windows were pierced at that level, a new entrance was made in the west wall and the pulpit removed to the east end. The galleries were also altered to provide two narrow north and south galleries and a deeper gallery at the west end. The building has long been in commerical use, and all the openings are currently blocked.
The interior retains few original features. The structure of the later gallery remains with two north-south beams supporting the west gallery and beams of lesser scantling supporting the two side galleries which taper towards the side walls as approach the east end. The roof structure is original and has pegged collar-beam trusses with clasped purlins; it was formerly ceiled below the collars. {1}{2}
