Full Description

This two storey coursed rubble house is somewhat over-restored but originally dates to the 17th century. It has two gabled bays with mullioned windows and, at no. 65, a 19th century shop window on the ground floor. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house probably dates to the early 17th century, with a slightly later timber framed rear range. The street elevation has two full-height rectangular bay windows with stone mullions and also a 17th century door frame. Inside is a stone fireplace which was uncovered in 1861 and found to have a painted black-letter inscription consisting of several verses from Psalm 116. The roof includes original beams. {2}{3} A building survey was undertaken on 64/65 High Street, St. Martin's, Stamford prior to renovation. It is suggested that the building is originally of a late 15th century date (the cellars and some other stonework date from this period), extensively rebuilt and re-fronted in the 17th century, and subsequently altered further during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The property seems to have been used as a shop as well as living accommodation, probably from the medieval period onwards and definitely during the 19th century when the shop window was inserted. A bakehouse was added in the 17th century, and traces of it remain in the current building fabric. Bakers continued to occupy part of the property until the early 20th century. {4}{5}
