Full Description

Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at Eastgate, built in 1835, and now known as the Louth Centenary Methodist Church. The building is of two storeys and constructed of brown brick with stone dressings. The front wall has six bays with entrances in slightly projecting penultimate bays and narrow end bays. It has two tiers of round arched windows separated by a platband, with conjoined cills to the upper windows and panels with a swag ornament below. A parapet above the middle bay carries the inscriptions 'Wesley Chapel 1835' in raised letters. The chapel was built to seat 1600 people, and is believed to be a replacement for an earlier, smaller chapel on the same site, built in 1808. Several alterations have been made to the building; firstly in 1872, when the 'Central Hall' was built, and in 1912, when a further schoolroom was added. The interior was completely gutted and refitted in 1977. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}
