Full Description

PRN36501 The Angel Inn is recorded as early as the 13th century but the present buildings earliest phases are probably 15th century, for more information on the earlier Angel Inn please see PRN 30501. There is some discrepancy in the date of the hotel, a building survey done in 2003 dates the earliest parts to the 15th century, {1}{2} The Buildings of England Series dates the earliest parts to the late 15th century, {3} and the Department of Culture and Media have listed the building as Grade I and date the earliest parts to the late 14th century. {4} The earlier part of the Hotel complex is the stone front range that probably dates to the 15th century. There are some indications of alteration to this part of the hotel in perhaps the late 16th-17th centuries. Probably also of this period are some sections of stone walling, one of them incorporating a mullioned window, in the north and south wings. {1}{2} Most if the north wing of the hotel, and parts of the south were built in 1776. The north wing appears to have survived largely as built, although there are alterations particularly on the 3rd storey where doorways seem to have been blocked and new openings created, probably in the 18th or 20th century. It is possible that the room arrangement at the end of the first floor corridor was also altered at this time, as access to the end of the compartment of the 1776 range is through the adjacent chamber, and not from the passageway. {1}{2} Also of late 18th century date is a two-storey storage building at the end of the north wing and a range of stables directly opposite at the end of the south wing. Numerous pegs in the storage room suggest that this may have functioned as a tack room serving the stables. Patching of probable 20the century date is evident in the flooring of the upper level of this storage building. {1}{2} Between the store and the main 1776 range in the north wing is a building of probable late 19th century date, with 20th century alterations. Much of the south wing appears to have been rebuilt, probably in the 20th century. On the north side of the north wing is a range of buildings of probable late 18th - early 19th century date. These are built against the 1776 wing and therefore post-date it. Further east, scars of former buildings in this additional northern range are evident. Map evidence reveals that these were demolished between 1965 and 1975. {1}{2} The Angel and Royal Inn is mentioned in Pevsner and Harris' The Buildings as England series as 'One of the grandest of the English pre-Reformation inns'. {3} The building is one of few remaining English medieval inns; it is two storeys high with a stone slate roof, with a good medieval front to street with original window. It has buttresses, panelled parapet, and carriageway on the right with a well-carved demi-angel corbel above supporting oriel window. On the back, on the north side of the yard there is a long range dated to the 18th century, which stands four storeys high, constructed in brick. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
