Full Description

PRN 13668 The original layout of the farm buildings formed a 'U' shape. Only the southern half of this arrangement was recorded, with the northern half being a separate property, having been previously converted to residential property. The recorded section formed an 'L-shape' arrangement, with south-east to north-west and north-east to south-west wings. The two ranges are separated by a garden wall with an arched gateway. The recorded buildings form a one-storey brick built structure opened to its pitched roofs. The earliest phases of building appeared to be the cow house, which still retained its original brick floor, trough and feeding rack. Re-used timber was utilised in this part of the building, including a chamfered beam that may be as early as the 17th century. The next phase of construction was an open fronted cart shed. An embossed iron column used in this structure suggests the cart shed dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. The final, most recent phases are represented by an extension to the cart shed in machine-made brick. The replacement raised the roof of the cow shed and inserted a breeze-block dividing wall. {1} {2} Home Farm, Holland Fen with Brothertoft. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {3}
