Full Description

PRN 36130 During trial trenching in 2002, a north/south aligned linear feature was recorded, containing seventeenth to eighteenth century pottery. A possible purse hoard was also recovered, consisting of a group of five coins and a piece of leather. The coins were: - a copper alloy George II half penny dated 1806-7, a copper alloy Victoria one penny dated 1860-9, a copper alloy Victoria half penny dated 1885, a copper alloy possible half penny dated 1860 or later, and a milled silver possible two shilling piece dated later than 1662. The hoard is unusual in having an 1806/7 half penny in association with other coins as late as 1885. Milling coins was introduced in 1662, but this example is likely to be no earlier than the nineteenth century.{1}{2}
