Full Description

Three medieval walls were recorded during a watching brief at St Mary's School, Pottergate. Very similar to one another, the walls all consisted of three to four courses of roughly faced unbonded limestone fragments. All the walls appear to be without foundations and two have a ditch dug at their base. This suggests that they didn't stand very high and were unlikely to support a roof. It is possible these walls may have been associated with the enclosure of animals or a similar function. A floor deposit close to one of the walls has been tentatively suggested that it could be from an associated building. Beneath the walls three successive floor surfaces of burnt clay were recorded, which may indicate structures although there is no direct evidence for this. {1}{2}
