Full Description
62389
A Primitive Methodist Chapel is indicated on the 1905 OS County Series in Chapel Hill, adjacent to the Witham. The building was still there in the 1950s. {1}
The site was visited in 2009. It is unclear from the 1905 OS County Series map exactly which of three buildings is indicated as the Primitve Methodist chapel. A house on the Witham Bank named Caulton House is said to be the former chapel and has the chapel date tablet 'Primitive Methodist Chapel 1852' set in the garden. This building was the village Hall until the 1960s at which time it became a house. It was completely renovated, rendered and extended in the 1990s (personal communication). The small single storey gabled building has been completely refenestrated and entirely rendered obscuring all detail and no original features can be discerned. Velux windows have been inserted in the roof.{2}
