Full Description

Like Hibaldstow Mill, this is a combined wind and water mill. Here, however, the combination was complete as the three pairs of stones could be driven either by wind or by water power. It was built in 1847, by Saunderson of Louth, on the site of an existing water mill, and was worked by wind until the mid 1920s, carrying on by water for a while after this. It was eventually gutted and converted into a house. The stage has been retained, as has the external iron breastshot wheel, formerly enclosed in a wheel house. It had four patent sails which drove the stones overdrift in the usual manner. The wheel drove the same stones underdrift, with duplicated spur gearing. The upright shaft was not continuous, however, as it was not practical to have both drives engaged at once. {1} A red brick tower mill with a detached, free-standing water wheel. It was built in 1847 by Saunderson of Louth and was altered in the 20th century.
