Full Description
The only smock mill to remain in Lincolnshire, this was originally a pumping mill in Deeping Fen, probably dating from the 18th century. In about 1845 it was moved to Dyke and fitted with corn milling machinery. It ceased work in the mid 1920's and was dismantled in 1926. It had a boat-shaped cap turned to wind by a braced tailpole, both features inherited from its former use. It had two common and two spring shuttered sails, driving three pairs of stones. {1}
It was named a 'smock' mill due to its resemblance of the countryman's antique linen smock frock 'overall'. In recent years there have been extensive repairs carried out to the wooden structure and new weather boarding has been fitted. {2}
